They’ve gained confidence with each victory and given their fans reason to feel optimistic about the direction in which the team is headed.

It’s been a struggle to follow the bouncing basketball.

At this point in the season, the Knicks have to be worried about

the lack of timely rebounds. Their negative body language on the court

is an indication of the frustration whenever they work hard on defense

and fail to clean up on the boards to close out a possession.

Boston was downright antagonistic on Tuesday, grabbing nine

offensive caroms.

“That’s going to happen some because we do play small,” Knicks

coach Mike D’Antoni said afterward. “When we got after it in the last

16 minutes, they didn’t hurt us. If we’re going to play little, we

have to play hard.”

On the season, the Knicks rank last in the league when it comes to

Right now, the numbers are very intriguing. The productive forward is averaging 20 points and 12 rebounds. He’s recorded eight consecutive double-doubles, which is attracting some attention from teams who might be looking to add low post help in the future.

The contract is heavy, with $33 million due over the next two seasons.

Even so, it wouldn’t be impossible to move Randolph. It’s a deal that could very well prevent the Knicks from making a playoff run, though.

There was no progress reported, but Stephon Marbury did at least meet with Knicks president Donnie Walsh this week.

It is unclear whether a buyout was discussed when they visited on Thursday. Marbury has not played a single minute this season, and has not been in uniform since the opener. He’s not willing to offer a discount on the salary the Knicks are obligated to pay him for this season, the last on his contract. Walsh doesn’t believe in buyouts. He’s not having any luck finding a trade partner, either.

It’s clear this game of cat and mouse will continue indefinitely.

“There’s nothing going on, man,” Marbury said before Friday’s game against Oklahoma City. “There’s nothing going on but a humbling experience.”

He went for tests on Tuesday and remains in a holding pattern.

“I’m worried about it at this point,” Knicks coach Mike D’Antoni told reporters. “We’re just going to do what’s best for him. He’s 20 years old. We’d love for him to play in the next two or three weeks, we’d love for him to play in the next two or three months. But he’s got to be 100 percent well.”

Gallinari got run over in summer league by Robert Traylor and hasn’t been right since. He rested most of the summer, and was limited when training camp opened.
